FAQs
Q. The English Edge? Who are you? What do you do?
A: We are a small and quickly growing company of exceptionally educated and experienced editors, writers, teachers and translators.
Our main office in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Although we are based in a city that doesn’t even have a direct flight to Paris, we do have experts all around the world (and not just in Paris and Vancouver).
We operate most of our services online, but we are more than happy to meet with you in-person, so long as we have people in your area, of course. If you are in a major city in North America or Europe, we very likely have local experts who can assist you, face-to-face. We'd also be happy to meet you online via video conferencing.
We offer a full-range of services that help clients to perfect their written and orally presented material. While ESL services comprise a large part of our business, native English speakers are our biggest clients. The best writers in the world have editors. And we provide our services to some them - whether they are native English speakers or speakers of English as a fourth language. If they need expert assistance, chances are that you or someone you know does too.
Q: How do I know my document will remain confidential? How secure is the service?
A: All staff members have signed a confidentiality agreement, and we guarantee not to pass on any of your details or documents to third parties. All documents received by us are held on a secure server. All emails and attachments are scanned using continually updated anti-virus software. If you would like, we can also quickly draft an individualized confidentiality agreement. Your specific editor, writer, teacher or translator will sign this document, together with a representative of your company.
Q: How will I be able to identify the changes that you have made to my document?
A: All changes will be marked, using the ‘track changes’ tool in the word processing program that you and we use (e.g., Word, OpenOffice, etc.).
Q: How long does the editing or writing service take?
A: We aim to complete most work within 72 hours, following the authorization of your initial payment. But this may vary depending on our current workload, and, of course, on the size and complexity of your document. If you need a document returned within 48 hours, we have a rush service. You can avoid a surcharge for this service, however, by booking our time 48 hours in advance of submitting your document to us. In short, if you need your job done in two days, tell us 2 days before you send your document to us.
Q: How can I pay? Do I have to use Paypal?
A: We prefer to be paid via Paypal, but you can also pay by other methods. Paypal is free for customers, and it is easy to establish an account. You can even pay through Paypal without establishing an account. How? We can send you a ‘request payment’ form from our Paypal account. You can then process this form in 1 minute, using your credit card on Paypal’s secure server. Alternatively, you can pay us by cheque or bank transfer. Please ask us for details.
Q: What if I'm not happy with the editing, writing, instruction or translation?
A: In the unlikely event that there are errors in your text or that you find our instruction unsatisfactory, The English Edge will provide you with a refund or perform work on your project or program - free of charge. Please see our ‘Policies’ page on this website for details.
Q: Who will edit or write my document? What are their qualifications?
A: Our editors and writers have been trained specifically in editing and/or writing. In addition to their excellent knowledge of English and significant experience with editing and writing for a living, our writers and editors come from a wide range of professional and academic specializations. We will almost certainly be able to pair your project with someone who has significant experience in the area of your project. When a project is multi-faceted, we can allocate it to a small team of diverse experts. Most of our editors and writers hold a minimum of a master’s degree and have published work in their respective specializations.
Q: Who will my instructor be? What are her or his qualifications?
A: Our writing, public speaking and ESL instructors – like our writers and editors – come from a wide-range of fields. One thing that they all have in common is that they have all been trained specifically as writing, public speaking or English instructors. For example, most of our ESL teachers hold one or more ESL certifications. There are, however, a few exceptions, where some ESL teachers do not have formal ESL training. These teachers, however, are highly effective instructors who have significant experience as qualified English teachers at the elementary, high school or university/college level. They also have significant experience teaching ESL. Most of our instructors have a minimum of a master’s degree.
Q: What types of file can I upload my documents in when I send them to you? And where/how do I send them?
A: We accept work in the following file types:
.doc (Word)
.odt (OpenOffice)
.txt (Notepad)
.wpd (Wordpad)
.pdf (Acrobat Portable Document Format)
.ppt (PowerPoint)
.rtf (Rich Text Format)
.zip (compressed)
Please send us your documents as email attachments to documents@TheEnglishEdge.com
Q: What happens to my files after the work is returned?
A: We store original and corrected documents on file for 30 days, after which they are deleted from all our files, including our email accounts.
